Wood Orchard is a family owned fruit farm in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. Jim and Barbara Wood established the orchard in 1955 after moving their young family to cool Door County from hot and humid St. Louis, Missouri. Now Jim’s son, Steve, and grandson, Jeff, work together to grow about 200 acres of strawberries, raspberries, cherries and apples in Door County on the Door Peninsula in Northeast Wisconsin.
For many years, McIntosh and Cortland apples were the main varieties in their wholesale and retail business. Now, however, Honeycrisp is the apple that is attracting most of the attention of our fruit growing family as well as our customers!
And now, much of Wood’s future planning is centering around another new apple variety. That variety is SweeTango®. As the name suggests, it offers a complex flavor of a sweet and tart sensation at the same time. SweeTango® is a University of Minnesota cross of Honeycrisp (the mom) and Zestar (the dad). We think that SweeTango® has the best characteristics of its parents (like most offspring do!).
Crista & Mark Kochanski and their three kids reside in Jacksonport, Door County. The Kochanski’s became managing owners of Wood Orchard Market (not the orchard) in January, 2017. The founding owners, Janice & Steve Wood remain involved in market operations and heartily apart of daily activities. Together with their family and friends, they make up the friendly staff at Wood Orchard Market.
Mark is originally from the Milwaukee area and graduated from UW-Madison. He worked for more than 15 years in banking. Crista (maiden name Larson) originally from Jacksonport, grew up in the family business, Square Rigger Galley. She graduated from Sevastopol High School and later earned an undergraduate degree from Carthage College and a Masters in Marketing from UW-Milwaukee. She has been working in marketing for more than 15 years. They have been married for 10 years and moved back to Crista’s hometown of Jacksonport in 2014.
With the help of many wonderful people, they work together to bring you a TRULY UNIQUE, TOTALLY DELICIOUS, and VERY DOOR COUNTY shopping experience. Wood Orchard Market sells much of what the Wood’s grow, a unique selection of gift items, a large variety of delicious specialty foods, and products from our in-house bakery.
